Trump visit to UK still on, according to Boris Johnson

Ministers have insisted US President Donald Trump’s visit to Britain will go ahead despite it not being listed in the Queen’s Speech.

The address to Parliament usually mentions planned state visits, but this edition only contains a reference to welcoming King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain in July.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said the visit by Mr Trump could not be included in the speech because no date had yet been fixed.

He said it was “wholly right” that the “democratically-elected representative of our most important ally” should come to the UK.

Speculation that the visit had been put on the backburner came after the White House denied reports Mr Trump told the Prime Minister he does not want to go ahead with the trip if it is going to lead to large-scale demonstrations.

Liberal Democrat chief whip Alistair Carmichael said the state visit should be called off once and for all.

“It took Theresa May just seven days to offer Donald Trump a state visit, it’s taken her 145 days to officially postpone it. President Trump.

“This is yet another humiliating climbdown for a lame-duck Prime Minister,” he said.

Samir Dathi of the Stop Trump Coalition said: “This is a stunning example of people power.

“We marched in our hundreds of thousands against Trump’s hateful regime and our own government’s complicity in it.

“For now we have beaten back the most powerful man on the planet. But Trump’s sexist, racist, climate-denying agenda continues, and so must our campaigning.”
