Fleetwood looks forward to German event

-

Tommy Fleetwood is looking forward to returning to action in Europe following his superb showing at the US Open.

The Southport player finished fourth at Erin Hills on Sunday, five shots behind Brooks Koepka, in his best major performance.

Fleetwood had gone into the final round just one shot off the lead and the experience could prove highly beneficial for the rest of his career.

The 26-year-old now returns to the European Tour, on which he has won twice, for this week’s BMW International Open in Munich.

Fleetwood, who is second in the Race to Dubai standings, said: “It’s always one of the best events of the year. I think I’ve played this every year since I’ve been on tour.

“It’s a great course and in Germany you do get great crowds.

“It’s a great event and I think that shows in the players that you get coming over to play.”

The field includes Masters champion Sergio Garcia, who will be making his first competitive appearance in Europe since his Augusta success in April, and last year’s Open winner Henrik Stenson.

Stenson is also the defending champion in this event having triumphed in Cologne last year, a victory which provided the springboard for glory at Royal Troon.

Other notable players in the field include Jose Maria Olazabal, Martin Kaymer, Bernd Wiesberger, Rafael Cabrera Bello and Ernie Els with seven Scots – Paul Lawrie, Stephen Gallacher, Marc Warren, Scott Jamieson, Scott Henry, David Drysdale and Duncan Stewart – competing.
