Speaking at a brotherhood demonstration at Hull, Dr Clifford said the war had demonstrated that the world could not be governed on a system of balance of power. The nations must be grouped together on a basis of brotherhood. Germany would like to think they were fighting Britain, but they knew better and knew that they were fighting mankind. We were fighting for the Germans for their emancipation from the tyranny under which they were suffering.

Forfar Town Council have failed in their bid to prevent the transfer of the administrative staff at Forfar Post Office to Dundee. Following a protest to Post Office headquarters in Edinburgh to whom it was suggested that an adminstrative centre be established at Forfar, the reply was that there was no prospect of PO administration being centralised in Forfar. Experience showed considerable benefit was derived in establishing the clerical and planning staffs in larger operating centres.

Family doctors decided to seek an end to a 40-year tradition of providing 24-hour cover for their patients. A vote to halt the legal responsibility to provide care round the clock came at a special conference in London of rank-andfile members of the British Medical Association. The move follows protests by GPs that their working week – often 72 hours – is much longer than average and a survey of family doctors which showed 72% wanted more time off. Alternatives are to be looked at.

The UK is a divided nation today with the country’s membership of the European Union on a knife edge. The pound dropped dramatically as the prospect of a Leave vote became a real possibility, although it recovered slightly later. That followed the north of England backing a so-called Brexit, with the south and Wales poised to follow, according to early results. The first 21 Scottish councils to declare backed staying in, raising the prospect of a constitutional schism.
