Although the armed gang remained at large last night, detectives said there was no risk to the public.

Speaking at the hotel, Detective Chief Inspector Andy Patrick said: “Incidents like this are very rare and I would like to reassure the public that this appears to be a targeted attempt on the premises.

“We are deploying significant resources to identify these people and bring them to justice as quickly as possible.”

He said: “As you will be aware, there are many ways out of Auchterarder: road, rail, bus or car.

“We have not ruled anything out at this stage.”

Mr Patrick added: “There has been intense police activity in the area and I’m sure there will be members of the public who have seen something suspicious that may help us with our inquiries.

“We would particularly like to hear from anyone who saw men running away from the car.”

Staff and guests were evacuated from the hotel for a short time, but were allowed back in while police continued their investigation.

Golfers were seen playing while the police helicopter searched the area from above.

Local MSP Roseanna Cunningham said: “This must have been a very worrying experience for staff and guests and I am relieved to learn that no one has been harmed.”

She added: “The hunt for the robbers is ongoing and I would urge anyone with information that might be of assistance to get in touch with police immediately.
