Newport oN tay: Landmark building to be converted into apartments

A historic Fife kirk has gone on the market. Trinity Church in Newport on Tay, which comes complete with original features, can be yours for the asking price of more than £280,000.

The landmark church on Boat Road not only offers wonderful sea views but also gives potential buyers a unique chance to incorporate stunning ecclesiastical features into their new homes.

The church, overlooking the Tay and Tay Bridge, is being offered for sale to be converted into self-contained apartments and duplexes.

These could take advantage of the many unique features of the church, including the exterior stonework and spire, the stained-glass windows, beamed ceiling, the octagonal altar and organ and high-quality carved wood finishings.

Trinity Church was built as a Free Church in 1881 by C and L Ower and its original design remains intact more than a century later.

The main nave has a high ceiling supported by wooden beams on stone corbels, while the large pipe organ was designed to frame the round rose window on the south wall of the church.

Planning permission has recently been acquired for the first phase of the redevelopment which focuses on the lower ground floor apartment.

A second phase is pending planning permission, and would involve creating two spacious duplex properties.

It is due to be submitted to Fife Council’s planning department.

However, potential buyers could choose to go in a different direction with their plans for conversion and use.

Orlaith Brogan from SPC Scotland said that with Newport on Tay within close commuting distance to Dundee, St Andrews and the new Queensferry Crossing to Edinburgh, the flats offered as part of the development opportunity would be highly attractive to buyers.

“Not only does it have a stunning spire, huge stained glass windows and solid stone structure, but it offers beautiful views over the river, and is within a quiet, attractive north Fife town.”

Trinity Church is being sold by Thorntons.
