A thief who shouted “Allahu Akbar” and threatened to bomb a police station after he was arrested in a shopping centre was yesterday jailed for nine months.

Jonathan Wishart – who served a 34 month sentence for starting a fire at a petrol station – made the threats after security staff caught him red-handed stealing bottles of juice and other items at a B&M store in Dundee city centre.

He first told guards “you should get better security because that was easy as f***” before going on the threatening rant.

Wishart nodded vigorously as depute fiscal Sue Ruta told Dundee Sheriff Court: “He then shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ in a threatening tone.

“He then stated ‘I’m going to put a bomb outside Bell Street [Dundee’s police HQ], fill your car with petrol and blow it up’.”

“He was reminded he was under caution and replied ‘I better shut up now’.”

Wishart, 30, of Dundee, pleaded guilty on summary complaint to charges of theft by shoplifting and behaving in a threatening and abusive manner at B&M, Wellgate Centre, Dundee.

Defence solicitor Larry Flynn said: “Once it starts with him he makes it worse. He is on various medications for anxiety and the like.

“He doesn’t remember much about the shoplifting. “It’s not good and he knows that.” Sheriff George Way offered to defer sentence for background reports that could lead to a non-custodial sentence, but Wishart refused because it meant he would spend a month in a remand hall at Perth Prison awaiting the outcome of the case.

Sheriff Way instead sentenced him to a total of nine months imprisonment.

He then stated ‘I’m going to put a bomb outside Bell Street’. DEPUTE FISCAL SUE RUTA
