An Angus man has been ordered to pay compensation to the Co-op after fraudulently paying more than £1,000 for goods with another man’s debit card.

Liam McLauchlan, 21, of Bailey Wilson Way, Montrose, admitted inducing employees of the store on Carnoustie High Street to accept the card for £1,116 between November 16 2015 and January 2 last year.

Defence agent Nick Whelan said his client was “genuinely remorseful” for his actions and had been engaging well with justice services.

Sheriff Gregor Murray told him “this is a case that cries out” for jail. “I make it clear to you this crime is such that a custodial sentence is going to be at the forefront of any sheriff’s mind,” he said.

“However, it’s now some time since the offence took place and you’ve demonstrated you can keep in touch with the authorities — a big deal in your case.”

The sheriff imposed a one-year community payback order with 270 hours of unpaid work and supervision requirements and ordered McLauchlan to pay £500 compensation.
