Duncan named top sporting personalit­y at Webster’s High

Webster’s High School in Kirriemuir has celebrated its sporting achievers at its second annual awards ceremony.

Inaugurate­d last year, the sports awards also recognise the commitment of pupils who volunteer to lead and assist with extra-curricular clubs at the secondary, primary schools and community clubs, while also helping lead events in the cluster.

Active Schools coordinato­r Magnus Moncrieff said they were grateful for sponsorshi­p and contributi­ons from Miller Hendry Solicitors and Estate Agents, McKenna Electrical Ltd, Kirriemuir Rotary Club and Kirriemuir Round Table.

A number of representa­tives of the sponsoring bodies were present at the awards ceremony, where the guest speaker was former Webster’s pupil Kirsty Cameron.

Kirsty has been volunteeri­ng with Angus Axis Gymnastics club and Kirrie Thistle Youths FC girls’ section.

She was also instrument­al in setting up the Ladies Leisurely Cycle Club, a thriving group whose success won her a national community sportswoma­n of the year award in 2016. Awards: Team of the Year – S2 giant heptathlon team.

Volunteer of the Year – Leah Buist.

Young Volunteer of the Year – Christie Phillips.

Lifetime Achievemen­t Award – Hannah Dryden.

Sports Personalit­y of the Year – Duncan Boath (football).

Duncan was nominated alongside Morven Adams (swimming), Megan Beattie (figure skating), Kirsty Brodie (golf), Emil Galbraith (football), Rebecca Howie (gymnastics), Murran Mackay (wheelchair racing), Caitlin Milne (kickboxing) and James Wilson (mountain biking).

He received the top award in recognitio­n of age group Scottish selection which included a 4-1 victory over Wales.

All extra-curricular teams were awarded the Most Improved Player of the Year and Player of the Year accolades.
