Don’t forget the Williams sisters

Andy Murray has proved himself an excellent feminist time and again, and even in defeat at Wimbledon he did not hesitate to correct a reporter yesterday.

In his press conference, a reporter was halfway through asking Murray a question, saying: “Sam is the first US player to reach a major semifinal since 2009.”

“Male player,” Murray interjected.

“I beg your pardon?” the journalist said. “Male player.” A likely slip of the tongue meant the reporter had inadvertently overlooked Serena Williams and Venus Williams, and Murray was having none of that.

Murray, who was coached by France’s former Wimbledon winner Amelie Mauresmo from 2014 to 2016, also called for women to have more opportunities to play on the main courts during these championships.

Wimbledon wheelchair tennis champion Alfie Hewett doesn’t mind sharing the spotlight with doubles teammate Gordon Reid, but he wishes people would stop confusing him for the Scot.

“I’ve had a few funny moments where people have come up to me and started chatting to me for 20 or 30 minutes, saying how amazing I am, but then saying, ‘I thought you lived in Scotland’,” he said. “Wrong person! “I had a really good one at the BBC Sports Personality awards – 45 minutes talking to me and at the end she said: ‘So you won the gold medal at the Rio Games, and Wimbledon singles’. I was like, ‘No, that was the other person’.”
