Zip slide challenge for cancer charity in memory of ‘hero’ dad
Event to pay tribute to well-known Montrose man Brian
An Angus woman will tackle one of Europe’s longest zip slides to raise money in memory of her “loving, caring and generous” father.
Dawn Murray, 37, will be joined in the adreneline rush by friend Susan Hogg, 39, who has also lost family members and friends to cancer.
The friends, who live in Arbroath, will be raising money for Cancer Research UK in memory of Dawn’s “hero” father Brian Grimmond, who passed away in May 2016.
Dawn, who works for Angus Alive and also volunteers in the local Cancer Research shop, said she wanted to do something special to remember him and roped Susan into joining her.
Mr Grimmond stayed in Montrose for many years and was a well-known face in the town as manager of the Scotscoup bookies before he emigrated to Sydney in 2006 to remarry.
Dawn said: “My dad celebrated his 65th birthday in May 2014 and it was in September that we got the diagnosis about his cancer.
“In July 2015 we got the news that sadly it was back and that it was terminal.
“I can still remember the day that I got told by my uncle as clear as if it had just happened yesterday.
“I went across to see him in November 2015 with my husband Michael, my sister and her little daughter who was 16 weeks.
“He got to see his granddaughter but it was a bittersweet moment when we saw him at the airport as he had lost so much weight.
“But I am glad that I went as we got to make some more precious memories while we could.
“My dad was a loving, caring and generous man.
“He was and always will be my rock and my hero.”
Dawn has been volunteering at the Cancer Research shop in Arbroath for five years since losing her mother-in-law Betty to cancer.
She is no stranger to unusual fundraising events and has previously taken part in things like firewalking and zorbing to raise money.
