Volunteers who are good sports needed for new helping project

-

Sporting enthusiasts are being sought to help people with dementia and depression.

The Kirrie Connections community hub run by the Dementia Friendly Kirriemuir Project is looking for volunteers with a sporting interest to help its latest initiative.

It will be working with the Sporting Memories Foundation charity to run weekly sessions, expanding the reach of the organisation, which supports older people across the UK living with dementia, depression and loneliness.

The idea is to involve them in social activities and help them recall memories of watching or playing sport.

By sharing memories and tapping into their passions for sport they help people to connect with others and their past.

Kirrie Connections project coordinator Graham Galloway said: “Sport is a powerful medium for many people, providing memories of great games, sporting legends and marvellous victories and also the friendships made and the sense of community that playing or watching sports brings.

“Kirrie Connections is looking for volunteers with an interest in any sport who can offer a couple of hours a week to help support our new sessions.

“Full training will be given by the Sporting Memories Foundation. We already have several people living with dementia who are keen to take part in these sessions. All we need now are some volunteers to help run them.”
