Dundee United’s Scott Fraser has hailed the spirit and character of his side after they beat Queen of the South at Tannadice on Saturday, writes Neil Robertson.

The 22-year-old midfielder came off the bench to score what proved to be the winner for the Tangerines, who had been reduced to 10 men in the 36th minute following Paul McMullan’s sending off.

The victory against the odds was all the sweeter after the disappointing defeat to Dundee in the Betfred Cup last Wednesday with United now top of the Championship table with the only perfect record after two games.

Fraser said: “The boys were unfortunate in the derby. But we did so well today, especially going down to 10 men.

“We showed great team spirit and character. We also showed we have a good enough squad to be able to rely on the bench as well.”

Meanwhile, Fraser’s boss Ray McKinnon has expressed his delight after signing former Ross County skipper Paul Quinn.

The 32-year-old was on the bench against Queen of the South after putting pen to paper on Saturday morning with the manager admitting the defender is likely to start tomorrow against Cowdenbeath in the Irn Bru Cup.

McKinnon said: “I am delighted to get Quinny in.

“He will give us real competition and experience. He is a winner but he is another one who needs games so he will probably play on Tuesday.

“If anyone gets injured or he forces his way into the team, I am sure he will be a good player for us.

“We have signed him until January which keeps options open for both parties.”
