Heritage festival to shine a light on the county’s rich history
Angus Heritage Week will celebrate the county’s history, heritage and archaeology when the festival returns next month.
The event, which runs from September 1 to 10, will feature several illustrated talks and displays at Angus libraries focusing on archaeology.
There is also a talk by historian Norman Atkinson about Arbroath 800 years ago, before the abbey was built.
There are several opportunities to gain access to historic buildings and take guided walks and special tours of National Trust for Scotland properties.
Angus Council economic development spokesman Ron Sturrock said this year’s programme was “strong”.
He said: “Every year, Angus Heritage Week shines a light on the rich heritage and fascinating history of this corner of Scotland.
“It is only fitting that a strong programme of events is taking place in our county during 2017, providing people from near and far with opportunities to discover more about life in Angus in days gone by.”
Auchmithie Heritage and Arts Festival, which takes place over the weekend of September 9-10, is part of the heritage week as is the Doors Open Days weekend, on September 2-3, which is a chance to step inside rarely seen properties.
Mr Sturrock added: “We are very privileged to live in a county where we are surrounded by history, ancient and recent.
“Angus Heritage Week celebrates our county’s connections to the past, while also providing us with an excellent opportunity to showcase to visitors what a wonderful destination Angus is, with our fascinating historical sites, breathtaking countryside and coast, towns and villages packed full of heritage and events such as the 2018 Open on the horizon.”
