Tayside and Fife boasts two of the top 25 restaurants in the UK.

Restaurant Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles and the Peat Inn near Cupar were lauded in the prestigious Good Food Guide 2018.

Andrew Fairlie’s two Michelin star restaurant climbed one place in the top 50 list from ninth to eighth – the only Scottish eaterie in the top 10.

The Good Food Guide stated: “A French approach to outstanding Scottish produce, including vegetables, herbs and flowers from the kitchen garden, results in dishes that have an obvious classical gloss.” The Peat Inn fell two places to 22nd. Kinross-born Tom Kitchin’s eponymous restaurant on Edinburgh’s Leith waterfront was a further place below, retaining its 23rd position.

MasterChef Professionals winner Jamie Scott’s restaurant, The Newport, in Newport, and Castlehill Restaurant in Dundee are among new entries to the guide.

In total, there are six Scottish restaurants in the top 50, including the Three Chimneys on Skye (25), Castle Terrace, Edinburgh (29) and Restaurant Martin Wishart, Edinburgh (41).

Cornish fish specialist Restaurant Nathan Outlaw was named the best in the UK, knocking Cumbria’s L’Enclume into second place after five years on top.

The Good Food Guide, published by Waitrose, was first produced in 1951 with 600 restaurants “where you can rely on a good meal at a reasonable price”.
