Launch of Lamb exhibition
The Friends of the William Lamb Studio in Montrose will tomorrow be hosting a reception to launch the opening of an exhibition in the town’s Museum.
The exhibition, which opens on Saturday, has been designed and funded by the Friends and Angus Alive to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the group and the development of the Lamb Studio into a more permanent museum and gallery of William Lamb’s art and sculptures.
The studio was bequeathed to the people of Montrose on William Lamb’s death in 1951, together with the art pieces it contained.
Since 1978 when the new gallery was established there has been a deliberate policy of casting all Lamb’s outstanding plaster models, a policy still ongoing.
Because Lamb had a specific interest in creating what he regarded as specifically Scottish art he tended to use local people as his models when creating his non-commissioned pieces.
A lot of local families still recognise the faces of their family members and friends.
The exhibition, entitled FOWLS at 40 – A Celebration of 40 years of the Friends of William Lamb Studio will draw to together sculptures from the Lamb Studio donated in this way.
These pieces are normally held in the museum stores and a number of sculptures, water colours, drawings and etchings are held in private collections.
