St Andrews
Lewis Wood, president of the St Andrews Students Association By joining St Andrews, you become part of an academic community that is more than 600 years old. Surviving through the reformation, both world wars and the rise and fall of dynasties, St Andrews has remained an institution that prizes academic integrity and quality above all else. Earning your place and finding your home in St Andrews is to join this noble and brilliant history, and we’re very excited about all those who are becoming a part of something so special.
Here are the top five reasons why we think St Andrews is so special:
1 Location: St Andrews, perched on the edge of a cliff by the North Sea, is uniquely beautiful. From the nearby hiking trails to the long beaches, St Mary’s Quad to the Botanic Gardens, St Andrews possess a space unlike anything else in the UK. To study and live in such a beautiful atmosphere is a privilege.
2 Socs (not the woolly type): The St Andrews Students’ Association has more than 170 societies and subcommittees. This is the largest amount per student in the UK. This results in endless opportunities for personal and social development outside of the classroom. Whether your interest is crochet or croquet, blood donation or blood sausage, there’s a society that will provide you with all of the opportunity you need to fully immerse yourself in your passion!
3 It’s small: Small class sizes, intimate tutorials, and limited student population make for a very tight-knit community of students, staff, and local residents. Having such access to topclass academics means that student research is informed and intelligent, and there are many points of access to make your academia the best it can be.
4 The traditions: St Andrews does really weird things – I think you’ll struggle to find a university with such concrete and beloved traditions as Raisin and May Dip. They’re part of what creates a common relationship between all students; we’re mad but we’re all mad together.
5 It’s fun! Student satisfaction for the university is the highest in the UK, and the students’ association is the best-ranked in Scotland! Whatever we’re doing, students are enjoying it, and we’re working hard to make sure that students continue to have the best time here!
