‘Longest day’ golf challenge raises cash for Macmillan

-

Staff at an Angus golf course have boosted Macmillan Cancer Support with a 72-hole challenge.

Montrose Golf Links chairman Andrew Boyd, operations manager Jason Boyd, deputy operations manager Claire Penman and course manager Niall Bruce raised £2,275 as part of the charity’s “longest day” event.

The foursome played over the Montrose Medal Course, completing four rounds in a single day.

Ms Penman said: “We finished our final round at 9.30pm and the final nine holes were played with the rumbles of thunder in the background.

“We thoroughly enjoyed our day and we are going to make the longest day golf challenge an annual event in our diaries.

“(This) is very close to all of the team members’ hearts and we hope that the money raised for Macmillan Cancer Support will help people locally.”

Nearest-the-pin competitions among season ticket holders and a four-ball auction for a round at St Andrews Links will help swell the fundraising total.

Almost £600,000 has been invested over the last year at Arbroath Infirmary, where three Macmillan community palliative care rooms with en suite facilities have been created. The former Inchcape Ward was converted into a new Macmillan day unit.

The charity’s Tayside fundraising manager, Ailsa Corbett, said: “Our work is almost entirely funded by public donations so we are extremely grateful for every pound given to us.

“At Macmillan, we know how cancer can affect everything. We’re here to help people live life, no matter what, but we can’t do it without the amazing people who fundraise for us.”
