Former McEwens boss says Beales will be big hit in Perth
The former boss of McEwens of Perth has predicted the incoming Beales department store will prove a hit with Fair City shoppers.
John Bullough said he was delighted to see the English retailer commit to opening its first Scottish branch.
It will take on the former McEwens building, with bosses confident they can open by the end of November.
Mr Bullough, who remains Perth City Development Board chairman, said: “I am absolutely delighted to hear the news that Beales has decided to open a department store in the McEwens building.
“We had ongoing discussions with several larger department store groups prior to going into administration, realising that economies of scale would make the operation viable.
“Our family has had a long association with Beales and are confident that their excellent reputation for quality and service will more than satisfy Perth’s discerning customers.
“I wish them every possible success and will give the management and store my support and custom.
“This is excellent news for the future of the city centre of Perth.”
The imminent arrival of Beales, which operates 20 stores south of the border, has been hailed as a major boost for Perth’s retail sector.
It will fill one of the biggest units in the city centre, and council chiefs hope it will draw shoppers and visitors to Perth.
The firm has yet to confirm how many jobs the development will bring.
McEwens employed around 130 staff prior to its collapse into administration following years of difficult trading.
