A man attacked in Kirkcaldy at the weekend had been out in the town to pay tribute to Libbi Toledo.

Peter Menellis, who is 25 and has learning difficulties, was left with serious facial injuries after being assaulted in Hill Street near the bus station on Saturday.

Earlier that evening he had met up with friends to remember Libbi, who died tragically last month aged just 17.

“I was on a tribute for Libbi,” he told The Courier last night.

“We were all feeling emotional.” Peter needed stitches and staples after sustaining deep cuts to his head.

He added: “I’m really sore. I can’t get comfy. I’ve been sleeping a lot.”

His mum Dot Menellis added: “He’s home to rest. He’s in a bad way.”

Peter was taken to the town’s Victoria Hospital for treatment after the incident.

His cousin Carlie Young, who was at the hospital with him, shared photographs of his injuries online in a bid to encourage witnesses to come forward.

Police Scotland is investigating the assault, which happened at around 11pm.

The force confirmed a man had been detained in connection with the incident.

Detective Sergeant Samantha Davidson of Kirkcaldy CID said: “The victim sustained serious injuries and our investigation into this incident continues.

“We’re eager to speak to anyone who witnessed the assault, or who was in the Hill Street area around this time, and

“Iwasona tribute for Libbi. We were all feeling emotional. PETER MENELLIS

would ask those with information to contact us as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information can contact Kirkcaldy CID via 101, quoting incident number 4763 of September 30, or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Libbi was found dead in Kirkcaldy on September 21 having been missing for 10 days.

A major search was launched after she failed to return to assisted accommodation in the Fife town following a visit to her mother’s home in Brechin.

Libbi’s aunt in California has set up a Go Fund Me page to raise money for the funeral and to fly the teenager’s father from the US for the ceremony.

So far the campaign has raised more than £10,000 of the target of nearly £15,000.
