Forfar hand reins to Weir

-

Forfar last night announced the appointment of Jim Weir as their new manager, writes Neil Robertson.

The 48-year-old leaves Elgin City to take over in the Station Park hot-seat vacated by Gary Bollan with the Loons propping up the League 1 table.

Weir, who has also previously had spells managing the other senior Angus clubs – Montrose, Arbroath and Brechin – will now take charge of Forfar training for the first time tomorrow night.

Weir was the unanimous choice of the club directors for the post following an extensive interviewing process and chairman Ken Stewart admitted the new man “ticked a lot of boxes”.

He said: “I am delighted that Jim Weir is the new Forfar manager.

“He interviewed brilliantly and is exactly the right person we need at this time.

“Jim will take over immediately.

“We also have to thank Elgin for their co-operation in what was a difficult situation for them.

“We had loads of candidates for the job and some impressive ones but we felt that Jim ticked a lot of boxes for us.

“He is local, has been in management for six-and-ahalf years now and has a good record.

“We have complete faith in him and he has talked positively about not just getting us out of the position we are in but taking us up into the promotion playoffs.

“We also have to thank Stuart Balmer for looking after the team in the last two games and for all his efforts while at the club while Barry Sellars still has to let us know his plans.”

Meanwhile, Elgin now begin their search for a new boss.

In a statement, the club said: “Elgin City Football Club regrettably announce the departure of their manager Jim Weir.

“Forfar Athletic FC approached the club for permission to speak to Jim regarding their managerial vacancy.

“Jim has agreed to join Forfar. Although extremely disappointed we accept his decision and wish him luck, we start the search for his replacement. The club will issue a further statement during the week.”
