Drink-driver alarmed fellow motorists on rural road

-

A Dundee man has been banned from the road after making the “regrettable” decision to give a relative a lift home after a day of drinking.

Concerned fellow motorists watched as Peter Glen sped up and slowed down on the road between Dundee and Newtyle.

They reported him to police who found the 64-year-old behind the wheel and parked up in a street in the village.

He gave a breath alcohol reading of 84 microgrammes – almost four times the legal limit.

Glen, of St Kilda Road, Dundee, appeared before Sheriff Alison Mckay at Forfar, where he admitted driving with excess alcohol on October 1 on the B954.

Depute fiscal Jill Drummond said a witness leaving Camperdown leisure park in Dundee around 9pm became aware of a slow moving silver Suzuki travelling in the same direction.

“It was then seen travelling at various speeds, went into the opposite carriageway, speeded up and then braked,” said the fiscal.

“The vehicle stopped, a male passenger got out and started walking off on foot. The driver then got out and walked towards the rear of the vehicle, staggered around and then got back into the driver’s seat.”

Police were contacted and found Glen parked in Newtyle’s North Street, where he was arrested.

Defence solicitor Angela Mclardy said the accused’s cousin had visited and they had gone drinking, with no intention by Glen to get behind the wheel.

“He wishes to apologise to the court,” she said.

Glen was fined £400 and banned for two years.
