Tourism conference to highlight opportunities in industry
A one-day tourism conference in Carnoustie will give Angus school pupils the chance to learn more about the industry.
Youngsters studying the National 4 & 5 Travel and Tourism course will be invited to join local tourism businesses and organisations, try out relevant tasks and develop new skills
The event is being organised by Developing the Young Workforce with support from Business Angus.
They aim to promote opportunities in the industry to young people and say the Dundee V&A museum has the potential to significantly boost the local job market.
The gathering, at the Carnoustie Golf Hotel on Monday, will be attended by almost 100 pupils from five Angus secondary schools – Arbroath Academy, Arbroath High, Forfar Academy, Monifieth High and Websters.
Angus Council’s spokesman for economic development, councillor Ron Sturrock said: “Our latest tourism figures show that £227 million was generated by tourism activity within the local economy in Angus, an increase of 26% from 2009.
“The tourism industry is one of the key sectors we support through Business Angus and this event is a fantastic opportunity for young people and businesses, from across Angus, to meet and discuss the growing opportunities available in our tourism sector.”
The national tourism industry contributes more than £11 million to the Scottish economy and supports almost 300,000 jobs.
Developing the Young Workforce is a national Scottish Government strategy to prepare children and young people for the world of work.
