Driver’s tyres ripped apart by crude ‘stinger’

Angus: Motorist lashes out at ‘idiots’ who left home-made device on road in Ferryden, while police investigate incident

An Angus motorist has blasted thugs who damaged her car after leaving a home-made ‘stinger’ in the middle of the road on Friday night.

Jacquie Clark was driving along King Street in Ferryden, near Montrose, at around 9.30pm when the car’s tyres were ripped apart by nails jutting out from a metre-long piece of wood left in the road.

Posting to online Facebook group Montrose Memories, she described the culprits as “idiots”.

She said: “To the idiots who planted this along Ferryden near the car park, well done. You have succeeded in ripping my tyres with your stupid idiotic behaviour.

“Do you not realise the damage that could have been done to people’s cars and to themselves?

“I need my car to work as a carer where I look after other people who can’t manage on their own.

“This has been reported to the police and I hope the persons involved feel good about themselves. If you have any ounce of decency you will come to my door and pay for the damage.”

Local independent councillor Tommy Stewart also heavily criticised the culprits.

“It’s shocking and it’s very dangerous,” he said.

“We will need to leave the police to do their investigations but I think it would be difficult to find whoever did it.

“I don’t know if there are children about there or not but it is an old fishing village so there’s a chance it has been left there by accident.

“I would like to think it isn’t malicious but what reason could there be to leave that?

“If it was an accident I would hope that the person would come forward and say sorry and claim responsibility.”

A police spokesperson confirmed the incident was reported to them at 9.47pm on Friday and said: “The driver of the car drove over a metre-long piece of wood which had a quantity of nails in it.

“She took it off the road and left it there with the council asked to collect it.

“At this stage it isn’t clear whether the wood was intentionally left on the road but inquiries are ongoing.”

SNP councillor Bill Duff said: “I’ve never heard of anything like this happening in our area before. If it was done maliciously then it’s pretty irresponsible.

“I would urge anyone to contact the police if they have any information that could help with their investigations.”
