West End lose out in battle of the bottom dogs

SUPER LEAGUE: Bo’ness too strong for Forfar men who missed late penalty

- Mark Johnson

Bo’ness United won their first home game since the opening day success over Carnoustie Panmure as they won the basement clash with Forfar West End at Newtown Park. However, it could have been so different.

United took the lead on 37 minutes when Ross Campbell turned the ball home after good work from Stuart Hunter.

West End took the game to their hosts and were given the chance to take a point with a couple of minutes remaining when the referee pointed to the spot. Unfortunately for the Forfar side, Graham Hart, normally reliable from the spot, missed the penalty and United held on for the points.

Dundonald Bluebell put up a good defensive display against title favourites Bonnyrigg Rose at New Dundas Park but as so often is the case with Bonnyrigg, they dug deep and found a way to win.

Goals from Keiran Mcgachie and Neil Martyniuk saw Bonnyrigg take the three points.

Jeanfield Swifts showed more desire than hosts Carnoustie Panmure at Laing Park as they won 3-1 over their Super League rivals.

Carnoustie went in to the game without three centre-halves through injury and had to call up Ethan Coupar from the under-17s to take a place on the bench.

Jeanfield took the lead on 42 minutes when Daniel Kelly was left unmarked at the back post, leaving the Swifts man with the simplest of tasks to put his side in front.

Ryan Dignan levelled things up for Carnoustie on 68 minutes but the visitors upped the tempo, regaining the lead on 77 minutes when substitute Robbie Holden, who looked offside, was allowed to race clear and slot the ball beyond Alan Cormack.

Kelly hit his second with 10 minutes remaining, with his shot deflected past Cormack from a corner.

Kennoway Star Hearts and Newtongrange Star served up a cracking game at Treaton Park with Kennoway’s Matthew Gay the star of the show once again with a hat-trick.

The Fife side ran out 5-2 winners, with the other two goals from Kieran Band, but had to come from behind.

The visitors took the lead after just two minutes through Jack Wilson but Hearts came back and led 3-1 at the break.

Ryan Porteous got Star back into it just after half-time but it was 4-2 on the hour. Then with five minutes remaining Hearts put the cherry on the cake with the fifth and lifted themselves above Sauchie who lost 1-0 at Linlithgow Rose.

The result of the day came at Penicuik Park where Lochee United won 3-0 against the league leaders.

George Shields’ United were down to the bare bones but started like a train and took the lead on eight minutes through Grant Lawson.

Four minutes later it was 2-0 when Paddy Deane fired home from 15 yards after great work by that man Lawson.

Penicuik tried to get back into it with manager Johnny Harvey making two first-half substitutions but Lawson made sure there was no way back just after the hour when he won possession 40 yards from goal and ran on unchallenged before slipping the ball beyond Kyle Allison in the home goal.

The game at Keirs Park between Hill of Beath Hawthorn and Broughty Athletic was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

?? ?? George Shields’ Lochee United side may have been down to the bare bones player-wise but they defeated league leaders Penicuik 3-0.
