More than just food on menu

This week is National Meals on Wheels Week, supporting the vital service that enables so many elderly and vulnerable people to live independently in their own homes for longer.

Meals on Wheels – most often run by our local councils – is a service that helps older people to stay nourished and hydrated with a nutritious daily meal. It is thought that, in many cases, this is the only proper meal they will have each day. According to The National Association of Care Catering (NACC), Meals on Wheels is an essential service that reduces costly malnutrition-related admissions to hospital that are adding to the terrible strain on the NHS.

The service can represent so much more than just a meal. It is a social lifeline that eases the effects of isolation and loneliness, with the delivery of a meal bringing regular human contact and, perhaps, the only interaction they enjoy that day.

Along with the excellent Meals on Wheel service provided by our local councils, many older people who perhaps aren’t eligible for Meals on Wheels choose to purchase delicious ready-made meals from local specialist providers. Companies such as Scott Brothers, The Family Butcher offer a wide range of nutritious ready meals that have been traditionally cooked and then frozen to retain all the goodness.

If you find it difficult to get out to the shops or to cook for yourself, or simply don’t have the time to spend hours preparing meals, this option is perfect for you. Not only is there a fantastic range of both traditional dishes and meals inspired by global cuisines, but these services are designed to make life as easy as possible for their customers.

You can usually order a brochure to browse through and choose your favourites or call one of the friendly and experienced staff who can talk you through your order. Vegetarian options will be available and most dietary requirements catered for.

The meals are delivered directly to your door by drivers who have been especially chosen for their friendly and helpful nature, so you won’t need to worry about anything. The dishes can be easily heated in the oven or microwave, whichever is your preferred option.

Look out for some lovely seasonal dishes in changing menus that mean you won’t get bored with the meals you are ordering – this is a really tasty and convenient way to eat!
