Grove stave off Hillhead comeback to stay third

-

Grove Menzieshill retain third spot in the National League after their narrow 2-1 win over Hillhead.

It was the second half before the deadlock was broken but Menzieshill then established a 2-0 lead.

A penalty corner by Gavin Byers and an open play goal by Paul Martin turned the tide in the Dundee side’s favour.

Despite a penalty by Callum Duke Menzieshill took the three points.

Dundee Wanderers moved up to sixth after their narrow win over Clydesdale and are now just out of the relegation play-offs.

Bobby Ralph, their main striker in recent seasons, grabbed a hat-trick, while Fergus Sandison scored the other goal.

Grange moved three points clear of Kelburne at the top and Menzieshill and Western Wildcats look secure in the top four.

Edinburgh University and Wanderers are fifth and sixth but only two points above the struggle to avoid relegation play-off places.

Perthshire recorded their seventh – and their fifth in succession – win to further enhance their credentials near the top of the second division.

Leading 2-0 midway through the first half, it all looked good for Perthshire until Greg Whittet pulled one back.

Perthshire restored their two-goal advantage and again Whittet pulled one back.

A late strike restored the Perth team’s two-goal advantage.

Scorers for Perthshire were Lewis Pyke, Mike Berry, Adam Czub and Mike Swan.

Menzieshill II picked up a point against Edinburgh University thanks to goals from Sam Tilston and Shaan Afzal.

Wanderers II defeated Glasgow University II 2-1 – goals from Paul Dailly and Robbie Alexander – to lie third in Central 2.
