England boosted by Farrell’s return

-

Eddie Jones believes England will benefit from the return of “great competitor” Owen Farrell for tomorrow’s clash with Australia at Twickenham.

Farrell was rested for the opening autumn Test against Argentina but returns at inside centre to face the Wallabies.

Farrell replaces Henry Slade, who drops to the replacements’ bench, and Jones expects him to make his presence felt.

“He is a good communicator and a great competitor,” said Jones. “We will need to compete really hard against Australia and there is nobody better at that than Owen.”

Jonny May returns from a hamstring strain on the right wing and Anthony Watson starts at full-back for the first time with Mike Brown out with concussion.

Maro Itoje was also rested against the Pumas but is among the replacements while Joe Launchbury partners Courtney Lawes in the second row after George Kruis’s performance against Argentina led to him being dropped.

Warren Gatland has made wholesale changes to the Wales starting line-up for tomorrow’s clash with Georgia.

Only Liam Williams remains from the side beaten 29-21 by Australia last weekend – and he moves from wing to full-back – as head coach Gatland looks at a number of players before Wales tackle world champions New Zealand next week.

Ospreys flanker Sam Cross, part of Great Britain’s silver medalwinning sevens squad at the 2016 Rio Olympics, makes a first start in his fourth game of professional 15-a-side rugby.

Munster centre Chris Farrell will make his Test debut in an Ireland team showing 13 changes to face Fiji tomorrow.

The 24-year-old will partner Ulster’s Stuart Mccloskey in midfield, with Joey Carbery making his second Test start at fly-half.

Andrew Conway shifts from wing to full-back, and the Munster flyer and lock Devin Toner are the only two retained from last week’s record win over South Africa.
