Perth runner conquers Antarctica

A veteran Perth road runner has returned safely after completing one of the world’s toughest marathons.

Peter Ritchie braved temperatures as low as -25C as he trudged 26.2 miles across the Union Glacier in Antarctica.

In doing so, the 46-year-old from Blairgowrie marked off a sixth continent, leaving only a marathon on South American soil to be completed before he adds his name to that of an exclusive club.

Peter, now back in Punta Arenas in Chile, covered the classic marathon distance in six hours, 27 minutes and 57 seconds, placing 28th out of 38 male finishers.

Frank Johansen of Denmark won in 3:37.46 while Kelly Mclay of the USA headed 15 female finishers in a time of 4:56.37.

Peter said: “The race was fantastic but far from easy. I had a brilliant time and met a lot of new runners from all over the world.

“The weather was good for us, usually -15 C to -20 C, though with the wind it was sometimes -25 C.”

Peter’s efforts to join the ‘Seven Continents Club’ are in aid of Perth Autism Support, which works to ensure every child diagnosed with autism in Perth and Kinross has access to the services and activities they require. To date he has raised more than £2,600 for the charity.
