Martinmas sale of store lambs and feeding ewes

Every pen was in use for the Caledonian Marts Martinmas sale of 11,101 store lambs and feeding ewes in Stirling.

Buyers came from the North East and as far away as Wales, Norfolk and Nottingham.

Store lambs (10,752 sold) averaged £56 (+ £2.01 on the year), selling to a top price of £95.

Feeding ewes (349 sold) averaged £33.55 (no change on the year), selling to a top of £60.

The judge, Craig Malone from Pitcairn, Cardenden, chose a pen of Beltex X lambs from M Kennedy, Lurgan, as his champions.

They were bought by R Downie, Newton of Crathie, Ballater, for £95.

The reserve champions were also Beltex and came from D Mcnicol, Whitecross.

They were bought by W&M Fotheringh­am, Drumcairn, Blackford, for £90.

Other prizewinne­rs included: First-prize Tex lambs – ML Wilson, Baluskie, £70; second-prize Tex – J Black, Tangy (Campbeltow­n) £69.

First-prize Suff lambs – ML Wilson, Baluskie £76; second-prize Suff lambs – IO Warren, Coull (Islay) £72.

First-prize Mule lambs – Inverdunni­ng £67; second-prize Mule lambs – E Mcgregor, Wester Tillyrie £65.

First-prize Blackface lambs – Brisbane Glen Estate £54; second-prize Blackface lambs – IO Warren, Coull (Islay) £55. Individual averages: Suffolks £65.88 (+ £2.22 on the year).

Texels £63.59 (+ £2.14). Beltex £74 (+ 17p). Mules £55.44 (+ £1.32). BFS £38.77 (- £2.15).
