Cathedral’s schoolhouse goes on the market

BRECHIN: The 15th Century building retains many of its original features

- Graeme strachan

It is said that school days are among the best of your life but would you fancy living in a schoolhouse?

An original 15th Century schoolhouse, which lies in the grounds of Brechin Cathedral, has gone on the market.

Built in 1429, 9 Chanonry Wynd, which has a rich history as the school for the cathedral, is on sale for offers over £125,000.

The property is described as being in a peaceful, tranquil position, just a short walk from the cathedral along a narrow wynd lined with old stone walls.

The home, with three bedrooms, still retains some period features, including exposed beams in the living space and inset windows.

It has two bedrooms and a study or workroom on the ground floor, while upstairs is a lounge, kitchen, double bedroom and shower room.

There are small gardens, while a herbaceous border could be transformed into a parking area.

Caroline Young, spokeswoman for selling agent SPC Scotland, said: “This property is in a really idyllic location, surrounded by history and close to the outstanding natural beauty of Cairngorm National Park. The cathedral in Brechin dates from the 13th Century and there is also an 11th Century round tower owned by Historic Scotland, so Brechin has the feel of a medieval town.

“While the home has only been owned by a number of different people, it has been upgraded and modernised by its previous owners to offer comfortable accommodation while retaining a traditional feel and a strong sense of history.”

Though it is attached to the cathedral today, Brechin Round Tower predates the rest of the building.

Brechin’s religious community probably dates back to at least the reign of Kenneth II (971-75), with the tower likely to have been built a century or two later.

The tower was free standing until 1806, when it became connected to the south-west angle of the cathedral’s nave.
