Two 15-year-old boys have been charged with assault after a teenager was found with severe head injuries on a Dundee street.

Police said the pair had been reported to the procurator fiscal in connection with an alleged incident in Adelaide Place in the early hours of last Saturday.

Officers made a number of appeals for information after a taxi driver found a 17-year-old man lying unconscious in the street at around 5.30am.

The youth was believed to have suffered a fractured skull and was taken to Ninewells Hospital.

He is understood to still be in a coma, but his condition is not believed to have deteriorated.

The teenager’s mother and other family members have been keeping a round-the-clock bedside vigil over the festive season.

Mystery initially surrounded the discovery and police launched a major investigation, making a number of appeals to the public for information.

The area was cordoned off last weekend as officers made inquiries.

Wheelie bins were laid on the road to cover clothing that had been cut from the youth by paramedics, who put him in a neck brace before taking him to Ninewells.

The taxi driver who called 999 said she looked on as they battled to save the boy, before giving a statement to police.

She described how she was “trembling” after finding the teenager, who was unresponsive and had one of his shoes beside him on the road.

Forensic officers spent two days combing the street and the footpath that runs alongside it to Kinghorne Road.

Residents expressed shock at the incident and said they had seen a large police presence in the area, with officers making door-to-door inquiries.

The victim’s family are said to be taking things “one day at a time” in the hope that he will come round soon.
