Dundonald slip to third after late double blow

SUPER LEAGUE: Bluebell beaten at Penicuik, West End hit for eight at Broxburn

- Peter rundo

Just three fixtures survived the elements on Saturday and all three ended in disappointment for Courier Country clubs.

None more so than Dundonald Bluebell who lost 3-1 at Penicuik and slipped to third place as a consequence.

Two late goals proved to be their undoing. After Sean Jamieson had put Cuikie ahead midway through the first half Archie Campbell replied for the Fifers on the hour-mark.

However, late strikes from Ryan Baptie and Jack Hamilton meant the visitors returned empty-handed.

In a match switched to New Dundas Park, Bonnyrigg Rose reclaimed top spot after a comfortable 5-1 win over Kennoway Star Hearts.

Keith Lough put Bonnyrigg ahead after 17 minutes and two minutes later Wayne Mcintosh made it two.

A minute from the interval, Chris Gay pulled one back for Hearts, but immediately Lee Curran re-established Rose’s two-goal advantage.

Just after the hour-mark, Neil Martyniuk sent the keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot and also scored the fifth with a great strike with 15 minutes left.

Bottom-of-the-table Forfar West End were well beaten by Broxburn Athletic at New Albyn Park where they conceded eight without a reply.

It was by far and away the Strathmore Park side’s heaviest defeat of the season and deepens their relegation worries.

Daryl Mackenzie’s men had looked the likelier to score before the hosts got their noses in front and thereafter the proverbial roof fell in.

On target for the home side were Alex Murray with a hat-trick, Ross Nimmo and Darren Downie with doubles and a Dale Robertson own goal.

Broughty Athletic meanwhile have confirmed that goalkeeper Iain Ross has left the club and signed for League Two outfit Elgin City, managed by former Luncarty boss Gavin Price.

The Fed became aware of Elgin’s interest in the keeper when they made contact just before Christmas.

Given that Ross has only six months left on his current contract and was very eager to make the move north, the transfer was agreed and the deal has now been completed.

In the wake of Linlithgow Rose and Hill of Beath’s games at Carnoustie Panmure and Jeanfield Swifts respectively being postponed, the pair met in a re-arranged second round tie at Prestonfield from which the Lothian side emerged 2-0 winners.

Tommy Coyne got the opener after 28 minutes with Jamie Mckenzie netting number two with eight minutes remaining. Premier League

Tayport came from behind to win 3-2 against an industrious Kirrie Thistle side, but made hard work of it after passing up a whole host of chances.

Even before Alan Tulleth opened the scoring after five minutes with a neat low finish, two gilt-edged chances had gone abegging.

Without a goal in their last six league games, Kirrie then managed two in quick succession.

A point-blank Abe Nije header was blocked by Port keeper Gavin Sorley but the striker netted the rebound. Then with 30 minutes gone Ryan Kerrigan bundled in Thistle’s second.

In Port’s pursuit of an equaliser, Alan Tulleth cracked a free-kick from distance against the bar.

The home side levelled on 43 minutes as Dale Reid converted a spot-kick after he had been fouled.

With eight minutes left Tayport grabbed the winner after Gary Sutherland netted a Jamie Gill cross at the near post.

The games involving St Andrews United, Glenrothes and Thornton were all postponed.

East Kilbride will be Lochee United’s opponents in the Scottish Cup fourth round after they trounced Thorniewood United 7-1 in their third round replay.

The tie at Thomson Park is scheduled for Saturday January 20.
