Cystic fibrosis volunteer Charles ‘Chic’ Moncur, aged 90

-

Family and friends of Charles Moncur are mourning the loss of a dear husband, father and grandfather.

Charles, known as Chic to those close to him, died peacefully aged 90 in Dundee on Boxing Day.

He served in the Royal Signals before becoming a paratrooper.

His time on National Service, between 1945 and 1948, included a stint in Palestine after the end of the Second World War.

Before military life he secured his first job at Murray’s Radio shop in Dundee as an apprentice mechanic.

He returned to the shop after leaving the army before going on to work for NCR for more than 30 years.

Chic met the love of his life, Irene, in 1948 and married her five years later.

In 2013, they celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary and were treated with a visit from the Lord Provost at their West Ferry home.

The couple, known for their dedicated volunteering and community work, had two children, Graham and Helen, and five grandchildren.

While Irene gave 36 years voluntary service at Save the Children charity shop in Broughty Ferry, Chic dedicated 17 years as secretary to the Cystic Fibrosis Research Trust across east Scotland and regularly supported sufferers and their families at home.

A generous and tireless volunteer, he gave talks to Rotary clubs, Women’s Guilds and churches to raise awareness and money for research into the condition.

While not helping others, Chic was a regular at Tannadice.

One of his best memories, he recalled, was watching United win the Scottish Cup in 1994 and the joyous open-top bus parade that followed.

Chic also found happiness as a member of Dundee’s Menolej group and took pride in climbing Schiehallion with them.

Chic battled Alzheimer’s disease after first being diagnosed in 1997.

But to everyone who knew, loved and interacted with him, the bright spark of his character and spirit never dwindled as his memory had.

His funeral will take place at Dundee Crematorium at 11.45am this Friday.
