Edgar Broughton

Green Hotel, Kinross January 19

- ANDREW WELSH

Edgar Broughton Band’s no-frills, unpretentious songs provided impact and savagery in the postwoodstock early-70s.

In sharp contrast to glam and prog pomp, the psychedelic protest rockers’ debut album Wasa Wasa came over like early Stooges blended with Captain Beefheart’s mutant blues.

With Broughton’s gritty vocal style akin to Beefheart’s Don Van Vliet and Howlin’ Wolf, the Warwick outfit attracted notoriety after riots at some of their shows resulted in several towns banning them. Initially a power trio, EBB’S brand of raw, trash-can rock ‘n’ roll saw second album Sing Brother Sing (1970) reach 18 in the charts, with their eponymous, folk-tinged follow-up peaking at 28 in 71.

Broughton — who’ll perform a rare acoustic set at Kinross — remains best known for the top 40 singles Out Demons Out and Apache Dropout.

Now 70, he ceased studio work in the early 80s but later played a series of reunion tours and released solo album By Myself in 2011.
