Four injured after car ploughs into shop front
ST ANDREWS: Group of Chinese students hurt after Golf mounts pavement
Four people were injured when a car mounted the pavement and ploughed into a group of students in St Andrews.
The men were taken to hospital following the incident just before midday yesterday.
They were part of a group of Chinese students on an exchange programme with the University of Highlands and Islands who were understood to be visiting St Andrews for the day.
Police said the casualties were treated for minor back and leg injuries.
A man is to be reported to the procurator fiscal in connection with the collision, which occurred at the corner of Market Street and Church Street.
The street and several shops were closed for almost two hours while around a dozen police officers and four ambulance crews dealt with the emergency.
The VW Golf, which was left with a smashed windscreen, then struck a ground level window of the Bonkers gift shop, showering glass into the lower floor of the premises.
Shop owner Lindsey Adam was downstairs when the vehicle struck but said fortunately no staff were standing at the counter immediately below the window at the time.
She called an ambulance and said: “It was a horrible, horrible accident.
“We didn’t see it happening but according to witnesses the car came round the corner, clipped the kerb, spun and crashed into people on the pavement.”
Another witness said he had never seen so many police officers at one time in the town and described those hurt as “walking wounded”.
The group of around a dozen students were walking in the town centre with a UHI staff member before, it is understood, they were due to attend a lecture at St Andrews University.
A UHI spokesperson said: “We were concerned to learn about the incident which occurred today involving exchange students hosted by the university.
“We are working to support the students and staff who have been affected.”
Police Scotland has issued an appeal for information which may aid its inquiry.
A spokeswoman said: “Police in Fife were called to Church Street, St Andrews, following a road traffic collision. The incident happened around 11.45am on Friday January 12 when a Volkswagen Golf was involved in a collision.
“Police and emergency services attended and four pedestrians were taken to hospital for minor injuries.
“A man will be reported to the procurator fiscal.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact officers at Fife’s road policing unit on 101, quoting incident number 1074 of January 12.”
