Kane nets No 99, but Spurs left frustrated
Premier league: Tottenham miss chance to go fourth as striker closes in on league century
Tottenham missed the chance to move into the Premier League’s top four yesterday as Southampton delivered a battling 1-1 draw for their underpressure boss Mauricio Pellegrino.
Harry Kane scored his 99th league goal after Davinson Sanchez had given Southampton a surprise first-half lead by turning the ball into his own net.
Both sides had chances to nick a late winner but Spurs were the more frustrated at the final whistle, with fourth-placed Liverpool now able to pull five points clear with a win over Swansea tonight.
In Saturday’s action, Sergio Aguero scored a hat-trick as leaders Manchester City beat Newcastle 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium to stay 12 points clear at the top.
Aguero broke the deadlock on 34 minutes with a deft header and added a second from the penalty spot just after the hour when Raheem Sterling was tugged back by Javier Manquillo.
