Young gives credit to Brora after shock loss

-

East Fife boss Darren Young cut a frustrated figure after seeing his side dumped out of the Scottish Cup by Highland League Brora Rangers.

The Methil boss reckoned his side were sloppy at the back and blunt up front, costing them a place in the last 16.

Instead Brora, who had already beaten Stranraer in the competition and had yet to concede a goal, advance into the latter stages.

Young said: “We’re all gutted but fair play to Brora. We seem to have an inability to defend set-pieces and that was shown again. We never picked up and they got their goal.

“But we had chances, missed an open goal and hit the post. If you don’t take your chances in the cup then you’re out.

“It’s not a good feeling and no disrespect to Brora but we’re a League One side and should be beating them.

“We gave the boys enough information on them but it comes down to one man not picking up and allowing a free header at a corner.

“It’s as simple as that.” Brora started the game the better of the two sides and camped themselves out in the home half.

After a decent period of pressure they took the lead when Colin Williamson headed home a Gavin Morrison corner.

East Fife failed to really react to going behind and couldn’t fashion any chance of note in the first half.

New signing Craig Thomson, brought to the club following his departure from St Johnstone, was introduced at the break and the winger had a positive impact.

There was a lot more urgency about East Fife’s play in the second 45 and it was Brora’s turn to be penned in.

Chris Duggan should have done better from close range with the Fifers also almost getting level through Scott Linton whose freekick clipped the post.
