Investigation:
World-renowned forensic anthropologist Professor Dame Sue Black is leaving Dundee University for a new job.
Professor Black, who has led the Queens Award-winning Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification for 15 years, will take up a new post as vice-chancellor for engagement of Lancaster University in August.
She said she was “delighted and honoured” to be given the opportunity.
“That this progressive university has chosen to put engagement front and centre in its vision and strategy is a testament to the university’s foresight and vision in the field,” she said.
Sir Pete Downes, principal and vice-chancellor of Dundee University, said Professor Black left with her colleagues’ very best wishes.
“She has over the past 15 years built forensic sciences and anatomy at the university into a world-renowned centre of excellence,” he said.
“I am confident that the strengths we have developed in forensic sciences and anatomy mean we can continue to hold, and build on, that reputation.
“Sue’s contribution to the university over the past 15 years has been outstanding, both in terms of creating excellence in science and raising public awareness of the work in that field...”
Professor Black’s work is recognised internationally in the investigation of crimes as diverse as genocide and the abuse of children.
Next week she will re-enact one of Dundee’s most notorious murder trials that saw William Henry Bury hanged for the 1889 slaying of his wife Ellen.
