A globetrotting couple are to embark on an epic 12,000 mile journey between two different Dundees.

Adventurers Kevin and Donna Krummeck decided to celebrate 30 years of marriage by travelling from the village of Dundee in South Africa to Dundee in Scotland.

The couple will leave Kevin’s South African birthplace on May 6 to travel to Donna’s home in the City of Discovery.

Kevin 54, and Donna 52, expect the journey to take around three months in their custom-made Land Rover Defender.

With the couple’s children, Kyle, 29 and Skye, 28, grown up they have finally decided to take the plunge.

Donna spent the first 14 months of her life in the city’s Stobswell area before her family emigrated to Africa.

Kevin said: “We have been talking about doing it for a while but it was always pie in the sky.

“And then we just decided we were going to set a date and we are going to do this.

“Donna’s mum and dad live in Dundee and she has quite a big family there. I have been once and I absolutely loved it.”

The duo who own The Village Tavern restaurant in Margate, South Africa, are also using to adventure to fundraise for a South African charity “Helping Hands”.

The charity helps children in local orphanages who have either been abandoned by their parents or have lost their parents to HIV AIDS and face very bleak futures.

Kevin said: “We have to be there in three months because we are flying back to South Africa in August for our son’s wedding.

“Then we will fly back to Scotland and pick up the Defender and drive it back, travelling through Scotland, Ireland and Europe – it could take us a couple of years to get back to South Africa.”

Kevin bought the Land Rover secondhand for £15,000 and has spent another £12,000 kitting it out with essential mod cons, including a small kitchen.

He said: “There are no toilet facilities, but we have added a 40 litre water tank for brushing our teeth and washing dayto-day.

“It has been fitted with long-range fuel tanks, and we have taken the back seats out to fit a mobile fridge freezer which is linked up to an auxiliary battery.

“And we have a satellite phone with us so we can always get hold of someone if we run into trouble.”

Kevin and Donna will follow the West Coast of Africa, cross into Europe from Morocco and then travel on to Scotland.

Their journey can be followed on their Dundee 2 Dundee Facebook page.
