Loons have a chance to move into safe zone

Win over Airdrie could take Forfar out of play-off spot for first time this season

- By Eric Nicolson

Forfar have the opportunity to rise above the relegation play-off position for the first time this season.

A much-needed upturn in form has seen the Station Park side climb off the foot of the League One table.

Three in a row would be new territory – and so too would getting to thirdbottom.

Forfar face Airdrie this afternoon, with Albion Rovers just one point above them.

Manager Jim Weir said: “We can only focus on what we do against an Airdrie team that has strengthened in the transfer window.

“But it would be a horrible feeling to come into the dressing having not won and hear that we’ve missed an opportunity because other results have gone our way.”

Greg Hurst was signed on loan from St Johnstone on deadline day and Weir is hoping he can make an instant impact after scoring goals for East Fife in the first half of the campaign.

“We’ve scored goals in the last two games but I still think we can do better striker-wise,” said Weir.

“We need a wee bit more. Hurst will give us something different. He’s still learning and we’ll work on his weaknesses but he’s a really good finisher.”

Dale Hilson will hopefully be available soon to further add to Weir’s options up front.

As well as the long-term injured, Darren Whyte is also struggling.

Weir didn’t get everything he wanted out of the transfer window but his squad is starting to look stronger and he is keen to keep their upward momentum building.

“I felt we had a lot of similar types,” he said. “We needed more energy and balance in the squad.

“The two lads from Ross County did well for us last week and hopefully we can get another good result tomorrow.”

Meanwhile, Andy Munro has extended his contract through to the summer of 2020.
