Crisp manufacturer Mackie’s at Taypack is tracking towards a strong year of progress after making inroads into both domestic and export markets.

The Errol Brickworks-based firm’s managing director George Taylor said the company continued to punch above its weight in what was a highly competitive market sector.

He said the firm was seeing increasing demand in the UK and from its principal markets in Asia and had recently began supplying into Russia and Ukraine.

“Last year was more difficult but this year is much more positive,” Mr Taylor said.

“Eight months through and we are tracking 20% up year-on-year.”

Mr Taylor credited the work put in by commercial director son James and the wider business development team as being key to bringing in new orders.

“We have been massively pushing on with exports and, in particular, the Asian market,” he said.

“We have three main customers in China now – two of these are own label – and we have just had a fairly major listing with Costco in Japan.

“We’ve also picked up a contract in Russia and one in Ukraine.

“There is a new opportunity every week – some we win and some we don’t, but we are making good progress.”

Mr Taylor was speaking as accounts were published at Companies House for Taylors Food Group.

The business is an umbrella concern spanning a range of interests from the family’s traditional farming operations, potato production and crisp manufacturing to road haulage and property.

The accounts show revenues for the group – which employs a total of around 55 staff across its operations – eased back marginally to £5.92 million in the year to June 30.

Pre-tax profits came in at £451,912, down from £532,347 in the prior year.
