Former Dundee United defender hailed as ‘revelation’ for Reds

-

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has hailed Andrew Robertson as a ‘revelation’, and insists the Scotland star could be a key man against Manchester United.

Robertson has recovered from a sluggish start to his Anfield career following an £8 million switch from Hull City to make the left-back berth his own, dislodging experienced Spaniard Alberto Moreno.

The 23-year-old has started 14 of the Reds’ last 15 English Premier League fixtures and earned rave reviews on his Champions League debut as Liverpool battered Porto 5-0.

Carragher was among those who doubted the former Dundee United and Queen’s Park man could make an impact in his maiden campaign on Merseyside, but confesses he has been one over by the tireless defender.

He said: “Liverpool have a threat out wide. There has been better quality than what we’ve seen before from Alberto Moreno and Joe Gomez – Robertson has got great delivery.

“I was surprised when Robertson came out of the team earlier in the season, when Klopp brought Moreno back in. But Robertson has been a revelation since then.

“He wasn’t signed for a massive amount of money, not a big-name signing from Hull, and we wondered whether he was good enough to play for Liverpool.

“What he’s showing at this moment is he’s more than good enough to play for Liverpool.”

Robertson will be out to continue his dazzling recent form when Liverpool travel to Old Trafford for a mouthwatering clash against United on Saturday.

Carragher reckons Robertson and fellow full-back Trent Alexander-arnold could be the key to Jurgen Klopp winning the tactical battle against Jose Mourinho.

He said: “Manchester United will have to play narrow – certainly the back four will, because Liverpool’s front three play so narrow.

“Maybe Manchester United’s wingers will drop a touch, and then the Liverpool full-backs come on to there.”
