MSP ‘pleased’ to see wi-fi steps

-

A North East MSP has entered the row over a broadband blackout at a rural school in Angus.

A petition with 107 signatures was delivered to Angus Council’s scrutiny and audit committee in Forfar on Tuesday demanding wi-fi is installed at Monikie Primary School “as a matter of the utmost urgency”.

Parents Fiona Gray and Susan Paul told the authority the lack of internet facilities at the school is not adhering to the basic principle of Scotland’s children’s policy framework.

North East region Conservative MSP Bill Bowman said: “It is obvious that the strength of local feeling in Monikie is such that a petition has been raised.

“I am pleased to see Angus Council making steps to give equal internet access for local schools.

“Future cash from the UK Government to install fibre broadband will be given directly to Angus Council, which will put the power in the hands of local people who know where to use it.”

Committee members were told the connectivity is part of a wider programme to enable the roll-out of digital connectivity throughout Angus.

The committee agreed that necessary action is planned and the project is scheduled to be completed this session depending on approval from planning, Historic Scotland and conclusion of legal agreement with the landowner.
