Froxylias seals it for Sons as City’s long wait for win continues

DUMBARTON 1 BRECHIN CITY 0

Brechin were left still searching for that first championship victory as Dumbarton breathed some hope into their survival hopes with their first league win in over three months last night.

With Inverness losing against Dunfermline, the Sons’ first league win since December 2 moves them within six points of safety.

Dimitrios Froxylias lit up an unforgettable match with a stunning left-footed strike on 37 minutes.

Moments after missing an opportunity from an almost identical position, the Cypriot winger was found by Andy Stirling inside the area and he showed terrific technique to wonderfully curl the ball into the top right-hand corner.

After a promising opening five minutes, the hosts began to take the ascendancy and Kyle Hutton had a brilliant chance to open the scoring when he was found unmarked by Stirling’s deep cross.

Despite taking a good first touch and finding himself only yards out, the ex-rangers midfielder fired wildly across the goal from a tight angle.

Hutton then skipped past James Dale on the edge of his own area before embarking on a brilliant run deep into the opposition half.

The 27-year-old slipped the ball through to Froxylias but the winger smashed the ball high over the bar.

The visitors grew into the game and after Scott Gallacher failed to collect a corner, captain Sean Crighton had a header cleared off the line before Callum Tapping forced the goalkeeper into a comfortable save.

Just after the interval, Sam Wardrop’s looping effort left City keeper Patrick O’neil scrambling but the goalkeeper was relieved to see the ball sail narrowly over the bar.

Despite the visitors having more possession than in the first period, they struggled to create a clear-cut chance and it was Dumbarton who went to close to doubling their advantage when Stirling forced O’neil into a smart stop late on.
