Review: The Producers garry Fraser

-

In the current state of political correctness it is heartening to know we can still enjoy something totally irreverent, hilariously farcical, outrageously OTT and full of innuendo.

Fitting that bill perfectly is The Producers, Carnoustie Musical Society’s current production.

It’s a no-holds-barred romp of the absurd and the nonsensical – and a jolly enjoyable one at that.

The two producers of the title need to be a double-act of stupendous proportions

In Chris Duke (Max) and Grant Roach (Leo) we have a partnership that is the epitome of a crazy, madcap duo, a combination of well-timed humour and slick one-liners.

Both were outstanding, with Chris peaking with a quite excellent Betrayed.

Threatening to upstage this duo was blonde bombshell Ulla (Elaine Scougal), who’s If You Got shows what you can achieve if you let your hair down and really go for it.

Kevin Smith almost played it straight with Franz while Brian Boyd ensured his portrayal of Roger would be memorable with a wonderfully ultra-camp characterisation.

Production-wise, I though the finale to act one was rather muddled but the combination of John White (producer) and Jane Fenton (choreographer) really gelled in the Springtime For Hitler number, what with tap-dancing brownshirts and wall-to-wall swastikas.

The use of a video wall worked really well, once some minor teething problems were ironed out.

The show runs in Carnoustie High School until Saturday and if you want a fine evening’s entertainment – and the opportunity to suspend reality for a couple of hours – this is the production for you.
