Saints aim to finish on high

-

St Andrews University women’s team will be out to finish their season on a high when they host close rivals Glasgow in their final Scottish League game tonight.

The rivalry between the two has intensified this season after some desperately close games, not least their recent British Universities league game on Glasgow’s home court, which the hosts won 57-52 after overtime.

Saints coach Callum Knox and GU coach Charlotte Dalton have teamed up to take charge of the Scottish Students women’s team for their trip to play Northern Ireland next month.

But no doubt that will be set to one side for tonight’s game in which seven of the Scottish Student side will take part – four from Saints and three from Glasgow, including former Tayside Musketeer Julie O’donnell.

Muskies, meanwhile, finished their National League season on a disappointing note, going down 56-53 to St Mirren in their women’s quarter-final at Grove.

“I’d like to have finished on a win,” admitted Muskies coach Donnie Macdonald, who has done so much to develop the club but whose future must be in doubt following his recent move to Edinburgh to take up a post at Napier University.

Dunfermline Reign men have also finished their season at the play-off quarter-final stage after going out to Boroughmuir Blaze at St Columba’s HS despite 28 points from Jake Sirrell.

“That’s the highest we’ve finished in the last 10 years,” said captain Kieran Lynch, “so we’ll take that as a positive.”

Blaze travel to play St Mirren in the semi-finals at Paisley tonight, while City of Edinburgh Kings host Falkirk Fury.
