More pain is still to come

-

Sir, - I rarely disagree with Dan Wood but in his letter of March 23 he notes a ‘final’ humiliation for those who voted Tory.

I’m sure there are lots more humiliations still to come.

The Tories, the press and some of the public seem to have forgotten that it was the Tories who took us into Europe in the first place and it was the Tories who blithely threw away the historical fishing rights of Scottish fishermen.

The re-branded ‘nice’ Tories continue to use Scottish fishing waters as a bargaining chip.

Does anyone still wonder why they did not want to return power over this to Holyrood?

While we’re at it, the Tories want to retain control over GM crops.

Is anyone in doubt where this is leading?

I’m not a gambler but I would bet good money that Holyrood’s veto over GM crops will be overturned in negotiations over trade deals with the US.

Perhaps we should be examining all of the retained powers with the same scrutiny.

I don’t wish to muddy the waters in relation to fishing, but we should not forget that Labour, when last in power, removed thousands of square miles of Scottish dominion by re-aligning the international boundaries and handing them over to England.

Not shafted enough yet Scotland?

Don’t worry, there’s more to come and Scotland’s fishermen are in for an even ruder awakening when they realise that control will still not be back in their hands after the whole Brexit shipwreck is complete.

The UK plans to continue to use fishing as a throwaway card and that appears to be the future that lies ahead for the Scottish fishing industry.

For any fisher folk still wedded to the Tory party, remember that Holyrood has been completely ignored in all of these events and no representatives of the Scottish Government have been part of this treacherous double dealing.

The Tories have managed it all themselves.
