Bully Wee shatter Gable Endies’ unbeaten run

Montrose: Three-goal salvo had Clyde on easy street by half-time

-

Montrose boss Stewart Petrie admitted his team were out of it by half-time as their seven-game unbeaten run was brought to a shuddering halt at Broadwood.

The Gable Endies conceded all three goals in a disastrous 14-minute spell to relinquish top spot to title rivals Peterhead.

Petrie said: “There was nothing in the game until they scored their first goal, and then we have a bad 15 minutes and the game’s done at half-time. We tried in the second half but the damage is done.

“They scored that killer goal right on half-time and that takes the wind out your sails, no question of that. We have to dust ourselves down and go again next week.”

Montrose started the game off well and looked comfortable in possession, but they failed to create any real opportunities while Clyde saw Mark Lamont and Jack Boyle go close with efforts which went just wide of the goal.

The Bully Wee broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark when a long ball forward from goalkeeper Blair Currie ball found its way to Mark Lamont whose firm strike from outside the box hit the inside of the post and went into the net.

It sparked a horrendous spell for the Gable Endies as Clyde managed to score another two goals before the break.

Martin Mcniff rose highest from a Chris Mcstay corner and, although Greg Fleming got a hand to the ball, he could only push it into the roof of the net.

David Goodwillie scored his 22nd league goal of the season just a few minutes later when he received the ball on the edge of the box and turned a defender cleverly before giving Fleming no chance with a powerful shot.

Petrie added: “You’re never going to win every week, not a chance. To win seven games on the trot is unheard of in this league, because the games are all that close.

“We had a great result last week and a poor result this week. Credit to Clyde though, they’re going well.

“We knew it would be very difficult and we’d have to be on the very top of our game but we were a wee bit sloppy defensively for their goals, but their finishing was excellent as well.

“We’ve just got to dust ourselves down and get on with it.”
