KIRRIEMUIR. Chris Horrocks welcomed members and introduced Wendy Glass, a journalist, who spoke about her career with DC Thomson before turning freelance. Competitions: a Valentine limerick – 1 C Brown, 2 P Paterson, 3 C Horrocks; flower of the month – 1 R Fraser, 2 P Paterson and L Wells, 3 C Horrocks and C Brown; bulbs – 1 C Brown, 2 C Horrocks. March: President Chris Horrocks welcomed members and guests to the open meeting held on United Nations International Women’s Day. She also welcomed Federation chairwoman Frances Smith and Angus Provost Ronnie Proctor and his wife. The Rev Linda Stevens spoke about audacious women who had been influential on her path to the ministry, then Dianne Stout gave an illustrated talk about the work she does in India encouraging girls and women to reach their full potential.
LETHAM and
DISTRICT. President Evelyn Balfour opened the meeting and vice-president Lynne Webster spoke about her time in the Royal Military Police. LOGIE PERT. Cathy Aitken introduced Wendy Murray who gave a talk on the transformation of Easthaven village. Competitions: lavender bag – 1 I law, 2 C Aitken, 3 W Simpson; flower of the month – 1 M Grant, 2 W Simpson, 3 R Clark.
LUNDIE. Owner of Rookery Mead, Christopher Mullin, gave a talk. Competitions: two slices of honey loaf – 1 T Bowen, 2 D Mckendrick, 3 S Ridgway.
MARYKIRK. Mrs Henry welcomed members and introduced Craig Borland, a ranger based at Forfar Loch, whose subject for the evening was hedgehogs. Competitions: vegetable soup – 1 B Davidson, 2 H Macdonald; animal ornament – 1 A Rushbridge, 2 P Mitchell; flower of the month – 1 A Rushbridge, 2 B Davidson.
MEMUS and FERN.
Elsie Nicol welcomed everyone and introduced Annie Mclean who made a Valentine’s wooden spoon. Competitions: flower of the month – 1 K Melville, 2 M Donnelly, 3 K Steveson; gingerbread – 1 K Steveson,
2 K Melville, 3 J Buttersworth; posy – 1 E Grant, 2 D Farquharson.
METHVEN. Dot Goodison welcomed members and introduced Jane Sheldon from Linus Quilts who showed some of the quilts made for donation and spoke about the distribution. Competitions: article for a premature baby – 1 M Pearson, 2 D Goodison; flower of the month – 1 T Milne, 2 M Chisholm.
MUIRDRUM. Members voted to amend the name of the institute to Carnoustie and Muirdrum SWRI. This is to raise the profile of the group in the local community. They enjoyed a wonderfully informative presentation about Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance from Ally Bally. While still broadcasting on Radio Tay, the air ambulance has become a main interest for him. Competition winners: 1 Nancy Don; 2 Condra Kerr; 3 Evelyn Baker.
NEWTYLE. Heather Forest, who specialises in making miniatures, demonstrated tips and techniques and displayed some of her completed projects. Competitions: decorated heart shape sponge – 1 V Rennie, 2 J Fotheringham, 3 J Guy; painted pebble paperweight – 1 C Wilson, 2 J Fotheringham, 3 V Rennie.
PITCAIRNGREEN.
President Audrey Michie introduced Laura from Wiltshire Farm Foods who spoke about the ready meals the firm delivered to homes and offered samples to taste. Competitions: twiddle muff – 1 A Michie, 2 I Stewart; Scottish brooch – 1 A Michie, 2 C Milne, 3 J Colville; favourite teddy – 1 A Michie, 2 F Wylie, 3 I Hutchison.
