Mo boss hoping fans will turn out to back their bid

- By Neil Robertson

Montrose boss Stewart Petrie has called on the club’s fans to turn out in big numbers this afternoon as his side take what they hope is another big step towards title glory.

The Gable Endies’ destiny is in their own hands after Tuesday night’s win over Cowdenbeath at Central Park moved them three points clear of nearest challengers Peterhead at the top of the League 2 table.

Montrose’s win in midweek was their third in a row since they last lost to Clyde with the victories secured by an aggregate score of 11-0.

The Angus side’s fans turned out in force again at Central Park and Petrie is hoping they will do the same at home as their favourites take on a Berwick Rangers side sitting second bottom and desperate to ensure their SPFL safety.

Petrie said: “It was another fantastic win on the road for us on Tuesday night following the result against Stirling.

“We were a bit nervy to start with at Central Park but we got our goal and were probably a bit disappointed to go in at just 1-0 up.

“However, the second goal settled us down and we went on to take another vital three points.

“We had asked the guys for a big effort following the Clyde defeat and they have responded magnificently with three victories to put us in a good position.”

Petrie added: “We have trained this week as we have done all season and have prepared thoroughly for what will be a tough game against Berwick.

“We have had them watched and had reports done on them.

“They secured a deserved draw against us the last time we met and we will treat them with the utmost respect especially as they are still desperate for points themselves.

“We had a really vocal away support at Stirling and they travelled in numbers again at Cowdenbeath.

“The fans were outstanding and turned these matches into what felt like home games for us.

“I know it is an old cliché but they really do make a difference and it would be great if we could maybe get a few more through the gates for what is a massive game against Berwick.”

Petrie has a full squad to choose from with fit-again Liam Callaghan back in contention for a place
